How to Improve a Poor Drafting Fireplace

There is nothing worse than a poor drafting fireplace. However, this is an issue that many people are currently dealing with. Not only can this be frustrating, but it can also lead to a lot of issues if you decide to use your Massachusetts fireplace. After all, who wants a room full of smoke?

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to improve this problem. Before you can fix the problem, though, you need to pinpoint the cause.

One of the most common causes is a cold flue and a hot fire. In this case, you are not going to get the drafting that you expect. The best way to fix this issue is to burn newspaper before lighting your fire. Hold it up in the flue, allowing it to warm up.

Did you know that the height of your chimney could also cause an issue? If it is not tall enough, the proper draft may not be created. A chimney must be above the roof the correct amount or there is risk of not having the proper draft. Short chimneys have trouble interacting with the way the winds come across the roof(s), and could actually cause the wind to blow down the flue pushing smoke into the room. To fix this issue, you can either hire a professional to increase the height of the structure. Nobody wants to add to their home’s chimney, but this is often times the best idea and most effective solution.

Is there something on the outside of your home blocking your chimney? Overhanging trees could cause a major issue with blockage. Along with this, don’t overlook the fact that there could be something obstructing the flue. If you find that something is lodged inside, simply getting rid of it may be enough to fix your problem.

Finally, don’t overlook the fact that your fire may not be hot enough. For example, Duraflame logs do not burn nearly as hot as high quality firewood that you split on your own. If this is the cause of your problem, all you have to do is change the type of firewood that you are using.

While some solutions can be handled on your own, it makes good sense to hire a professional before making any repairs to your existing fireplace. On top of this, a professional can ensure that the problem is being taken care of – without risking your safety.

Although you may be frustrated, remember one thing: you are not the only one suffering from a poor drafting fireplace. This is a common issue that can be caused by a number of problems. Once you know the cause, you can find a solution. From there, it is much easier to enjoy your Custom Brick fireplace.
